Radiohead found an interesting nook in the alternative music world that allowed them to transcend from 1990s grunge-era darlings to a highly acclaimed and versatile act with an untouchable reputation. The English-formed group became forerunners in the experimental alternative scene, having enjoyed years of immense commercial and critical success. And while 2023 has not yet brought news of a new album (though I suggest checking out Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood’s latest project The Smile), the New Year has brought a highly entertaining fan recreation of Radiohead’s 2007 album In Rainbows.

On January 13, artist on4word uploaded an impressive rendition made up entirely of sounds from Super Mario 64 that’s truly a thing of beauty. The musician did an outstanding job at capturing the album’s elegant, entrancing, and sometimes frantic nature note for note with only the comfortingly familiar samples found in Nintendo’s groundbreaking 3D platformer. It’s not just worth listening for curiosity sake, this is a solid listen from front to back!

A North Texas native, I was born in '80s and grew up '90s playing a hefty amount of NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES. Some early favorites include Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Road Rash II, and Super Mario World. As the 3D revolution took hold in the late 1990s, my interest in video games waned while my interest in music grew. Then around 2007, I started recollecting some old favorites which led to discovering classics I missed out on. The casual hobby snowballed into a full-blown obsession, and it became my mission to make up for years of lost gaming.
