Before the Red Dead Redemption series earned its place as one of Rockstar Games’ most beloved franchises (more beloved by gamers than Rockstar itself, I suppose), its roots can be traced to a completely different video game company. In 2000, Capcom laid the groundwork for a Western-themed action game intended to serve as a spiritual successor to their 1985 arcade shoot ’em up title, Gun.Smoke. Plans changed when the development team assigned to the project, Angel Studios, was acquired and rebranded in 2002 as Rockstar San Diego. The far-from-finished Western project was picked up and completed under the new leadership. It released in 2004 as Red Dead Revolver with versions for both Xbox and PS2.

The title is a simple but enjoyable pistol-slingin’ third-person action adventure game. The story takes place in a fictionalized version of the Old West in the late 1860s. Playing mostly as bounty hunter Red Harlow, missions boil down to to little more than shooting galleries with duels sprinkled in, which is totally fine! Various weapons including handguns, explosives, and occasionally turrets help the player take down waves of enemies throughout the 8 hour campaign. The game also introduced the Deadeye mechanic, allowing the player to slow down time and mark shots, which are then fired in rapid succession to deal copious amounts of damage.

For good pacing, one can explore the town of Brimstone between levels and speak with townspeople, adding a bit more flesh to a simple story involving revenge against outlaws who killed Red’s parents over the location of a gold stash. To mix things up a further, certain levels will have you play as a different character, each with their own signature weapon. Levels are linear and the primary goal is to kill enemies move along. A rating is awarded at the end of each level, which can unlock additional features based on the player’s performance. The game also includes a local multiplayer option, pitting players against one another.

While not nearly as robust as its open-world successors, Red Dead Revolver paved the way for a blockbuster franchise that has enjoyed tremendous success under the Red Dead Redemption name. With its entertaining gameplay, relatively short length, and undeniably important place in gaming history, Red Dead Revolver is an experience well worth the time.

A North Texas native, I was born in '80s and grew up '90s playing a hefty amount of NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES. Some early favorites include Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Road Rash II, and Super Mario World. As the 3D revolution took hold in the late 1990s, my interest in video games waned while my interest in music grew. Then around 2007, I started recollecting some old favorites which led to discovering classics I missed out on. The casual hobby snowballed into a full-blown obsession, and it became my mission to make up for years of lost gaming.
