After a twenty-plus year wait for fans of the original three-disc Playstation RPG masterpiece, Square Enix finally released Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 on Playstation 4 (PS5 and PC in 2021). The original is one of the best works of storytelling in gaming alongside cinematics that looked top tier in 1997. Seriously our minds were blown and we thought graphics couldn’t get better…my how foolish we were.

Final Fantasy VII Remake had high expectations since announced at E3 in 2015 following years of rumors and fan requests going back to the Playstation 2. When it hit stores, it received favorable reviews for how much it stuck to the original game while making additions that were both fun and exciting. Final Fantasy VII Remake sold over 3.5 million copies in three days, making it one of the biggest launches for a Playstation 4 title, receiving a number of accolades such as Best of Show at the Game Critics Awards.

Like the original, you play as Cloud Strife going through the motions of a mercenary life, doing jobs for the radical group Avalanche in the city of Midgar until something goes awry and you find yourself on a journey of life, death, and the unknown. In third person RPG format, you and a group of friends travel through a detailed world to save Midgar while going through some classic Final Fantasy VII lore, and the new additions help keep the gameplay (and story) fresh. The mechanics are the biggest change, with the original being a turn-based RPG with 1997-era polygons. Final Fantasy VII Remake is third person real time RPG but does gives players the option to switch to classic mode in the menu.

On June 10th 2021, the Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade was released for Playstation 5 and PC, which serves as DLC that offers visual enhancements and a new adventure starring Yuffie, one of the original’s fan favorite hidden characters.

Final Fantasy VII has left its mark in the gaming world as one of the greatest games and stories ever told, the Remake saga wants to continue that legacy while creating its own with the next installment Final Fantasy VII Rebirth announced for Winter 2023.
