When the first teasers for Gotham Knights came out in 2020, gamers and media alike were left in the dark on several technical aspects of the game. We knew that it would feature notable characters from the Gotham universe and players would have options on who to play as the protagonist (Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood, and Nightwing). Now with mere days until its release, we have a better idea of what to expect from this action-adventure game starring the Batman family. Here are some things to know before buying Gotham Knights:

A Post-Bruce Wayne World

Gotham Knights takes place after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight. If you remember the end, congratulations you had the patience to painstakingly pick up all Riddler trophies before completing the game. Why am I mentioning that? I’m still upset about it – moving on. For those who don’t know, Arkham Knight ends with Batman’s identity publicly revealed, resulting in a swarm of press outside Wayne manor. Bruce drives up, ignores the reporters, walks into the manor as it blows up in an apparent last act to protect his loved ones. Sorry for the spoilers – you’ve had time. Gotham Knights follows the rest of the Batman family previously unplayable in the Arkham games (with the exception of some DLC missions), as they try to keep Gotham safe without the leadership of the Caped Crusader. No word if Batman is in this game. If he is, I predict he shows up at the end in an overarching plot twist of Bruce Wayne faking his own death. That’s just my prediction though.

Every Playable Character Will Have a Unique Style

Players will have their choice of character: Robin, Batgirl, Red Hood, or Nightwing. Warner Bros announced that each character will have a different playing style and even a unique means of traversal. Red Hood will be more of a brawler with gun-play, Robin will be into stealth, Nightwing has acrobatics, and Batgirl will be more melee and environmental through “hacking.” Each character will also have different sets of custom skill trees with abilities that will unlock as you progress through the game. This will give the player a unique experience each time they play through the main story.

Co-Op (2 player at Launch, 4 Player after Launch)

The most exciting feature of Gotham Knights to many gamers will be its Co-Op mode, the first in franchise history. At launch, two will be able to play through the main story together, giving the game yet another facet to experience. Warner Bros. upped the ante and announced that on November 29th 2022, “Heroic Assault” a stand alone mode that supports 4 players will be released for free! This will be an arena-like combat mode separate from the main campaign, so get your squad ready.

30 FPS and No Performance Mode

An interesting and albeit head-scratching detail announced by executive producer Fleur Marty, the game will not have a performance mode on consoles and will run only at 30 frames per second. Marty stated, “Due to the types of features we have in our game, like providing a fully untethered co-op experience in our highly detailed open world. it’s not as straightforward as lowering the resolution and getting a higher FPS. For this reason, our game does not have a performance/quality toggle option and will run at 30FPS on consoles.” A small sacrifice in an immersive Co-Op experience for the Arkham franchise fans. No word on whether Warner Bros provides an online update that will increase fps or add a performance mode.

Order in the Court

And the last thing we know about Gotham Knights is the big bad: the Court of Owls. So Gotham Knights will include fan favorite villains such as Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and The Penguin. However, the main antagonists will be the wretched Court of Owls, a secret society in Gotham made up of Gotham’s wealthiest, most influential, and most despicable. In comics and TV adaptations, The Court of Owls actually ordered the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents. No idea if the Arkham franchise is going with that route, but one thing we do know based on every adaptation of the Court: their goal is to reclaim Gotham from Batman and the Batman family. Though the crew never appeared in an Arkham game, this will not be their first appearance in video game, making their in-game debut in the Telltale Batman series.

Gotham Knights is available to pre-order for $69.99 on consoles and $59.99 on PC, with special editions prices ranging from $89.99 to $99.99. Official release date is October 21st everywhere on Xbox series X and S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
