Here at TGn, we typically stay focused on the positive side of gaming, but that doesn’t mean we can’t occasionally look at the other side of things. So just for funsies (because we know these developers worked hard and some people enjoy these), we’re taking a look at the games that made the bottom of the list in terms of critical response in 2022.
But before we do, let’s get a few things out of the way. This is strictly based on the opinions of game critics. You may not agree with it, and that’s totally fine – game on! Also, the list is based on Metacritic scores, a system that’s comprehensive but far from perfect. So with that said, let’s dive into the worst video games of 2022.
5. LEGO Brawls (PlayStation 5)
Developed by Red Games Co., Lego Brawls is a Smash Bros. style game that ties together various Lego universes while allowing players to customize their own fighter. Touted as a fighting game that’s good for the whole family to play, reviews are plagued with complaints of performance issues and overly grindy gameplay. The average score was also pulled down due to the iOS version, which is reportedly best played with a controller. You’re probably best sticking to Smash or at least a better clone to get your arena fighting fix.
4. XEL (Switch)
With intriguing Zelda style gameplay and a visually appealing presentation, XEL is a title that honestly showed a lot of potential. Developed by Tiny Roar and Assemble Entertainment, it follows a space pilot who finds herself with no memory after a crash landing in a strange world. While the original PC version holds average review scores, the Switch port is riddled with massive gameplay bugs, frame rate drops, and graphical glitches. If you’re really into adventure/puzzle games, it might be worth powering through the issues. But it’s probably a better idea to download from Steam if you’ve got the means.
3. Babylon’s Fall (PlayStation 5)
Considered both a critical and commercial failure, Babylon’s Fall was a live service, third-person, hack and slash, action RPG developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. I say “was” because the servers were shut down less than a year after the game’s launch due to extremely poor reception and low user count. With three fantasy style quests for players to go on, it centers around the battle the stop a plague brought about by an otherworldly force. However, player experience was marred by repetitive gameplay, mediocre combat, and a confusing progression system.
2. CrossfireX (Xbox Series)
At one time, the Crossfire series was one of the highest grossing franchises in the industry, sitting among the ranks of Fortnite and League of Legends. However, the latest entry in Remedy’s first-person shooter series is anything but a crowd-pleaser. Despite developers’ large aspirations for the release, CrossfireX has been heavily criticized for its bland characters, poor controls, and uneven pacing. Many reviewers noted that it simply feels like an unfinished game, and it looks like it will remain that way.
1. POSTAL 4: No Regerts (PC)
And now onto the grandaddy of 2022’s bad games (apparently). Developer Running with Scissors is responsible for this dark tongue-in-cheek first-person shooter, part of a series that began back in 1997 with the original Postal. And while that title was received fairly well, the series has pretty much been on a critical decline ever since. The latest entry, Postal 4: No Regerts, was panned for its odd mechanics, poor AI, and abundance of performance issues. Additionally, the game’s humor doesn’t appear to get much fresher than the intentional (and clichéd) misspelling found in the title. GameSpot went as far as to say that it “should be avoided at all costs.”
