The Twisted Metal video game franchise has been around for over twenty years, known for its over-the-top action, wacky characters, and powerfully destructive vehicles. As readers likely know, a live action Twisted Metal TV show is premiering soon on Peacock as fans hang in suspense. After the success of The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the pressure is on Twisted Metal to be next hit video game adaptation. As a longtime fan of the franchise, I’ve compiled a list of five things the upcoming series will need to be a success.

Stay True To The Games

The most important thing for the Twisted Metal show is to stay true to the games that inspired it. That means keeping the aforementioned over-the-top action, wacky characters, and destructive vehicles. The writing should encompass the games’ trademark humor, which is typically on the darker side. Perhaps most crucial is retaining the signature vibe; I don’t want this to be a serious Last of Us-type of take. I want something dumb and fun, because that’s what the games were. While some character endings were awesome, others were goofy and ridiculous. To be fair, they were still cool, but it’s the silly and fun spirit that must stay.

Bring back the classic characters

Twisted Metal has a more than a few iconic characters such as Sweet Tooth, Minion, and Mr. Grimm. Fans want to see these characters brought to life in the TV show in an accurate way. Additionally, the show should introduce new and memorable characters to help flesh out the experience. We’ve already seen that Sweet Tooth is in the game, but I think a mixture of classic and new characters would be a great starting point. A new personality along with four or five classic characters will keep the hardcore fans around as well as casual fans and viewers intrigued.

Feature a great story

The Twisted Metal TV show needs to have a great story that will keep fans engaged, one that balances action, adventure, and humor. It should also have some heart, as the characters should be relatable and likable. Many stories within the Twisted Metal universe exist to pull from. Characters such as Calypso, the man in charge of the Twisted Metal competition, or Sweet Tooth being a homicidal serial killing clown are great starting points. The games were all over the place in terms of story with each new entry. It would be nice if the Twisted Metal TV show had more fluidity in its narrative.

Be visually stunning

The Twisted Metal TV show needs to look amazing. Action scenes should be exciting, and visuals should be eye-catching with a a unique style that sets it apart from other TV shows. We’re dealing with cars that have weapons attached to them! This is where most of the show’s budget should have gone if we’re being honest. If it looks bad or cheaply done, it will undoubtedly break the immersion. You really can’t tell a proper Twisted Metal story without the visuals to match.

Be faithful to the fans

The Twisted Metal TV show needs to be made for the fans. The show should be something that fans will love and appreciate. It should be a show that fans can watch and feel like they are part of a Twisted Metal universe. Take everything listed and do it for the people that love it and not because you want a successful video game show. If you impress the fans, they talk, and bring about more fans.

If the Twisted Metal TV show can deliver on these five things, then it will be a success. Fans are eager to see what the show will bring, and we are hoping that it will be everything we have been waiting for. Twisted Metal starring Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Will Arnett, and Thomas Hayden Church premieres July 27th on Peacock.

  1. Idk. I think they they need throw caution to the wind and go full twisted metal black and hard R it. Too many good sci-fi action shows on stream now to just be another one. The evil melancholy of the characters in twisted metal black like the preacher and skull will make it stand out and shine. Fast and furious has done EVERYTHING possible with car stunts, the characters and world building is the only way this is a hit and not just another movie game.
