Hello again! It’s August at the time of this writing. I’ve completed Diablo 4 to my liking, I’ve played through a new Final Fantasy with the strength of Ifrit, I’ve even turned on my Switch and attempted to craft a jet bomber-like vehicle in Tears of the Kingdom, but gosh darn-it if I’m just not as crafty as the people I see on the internet. 2023 has been fun so far, and with only 4 months left, it has the potential to establish itself as a defining year in gaming.

Let’s look at September 6th…

Starfield is an upcoming game from Bethesda Game Studios, creators of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. It’s a space-faring RPG set in a vast galaxy full of planets to explore, alien races to meet, and quests to complete. After a lengthy development cycle spanning over 10 years, it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious games ever made. [Coming to Xbox and PC]

Onto October 20th…

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2018 game, Marvel’s Spider-Man. It follows Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they team up to take on new villains, Kraven and Venom. The game is being developed by Insomniac Games, and is expected to be even more visually stunning and action-packed than its predecessor. [Coming to PlayStation 5]

Super Mario Wonder will have players choose one of six characters—Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi — in new a side-scrolling platformer. Evolved for the modern gamer, it will feature plenty of new fun mechanics and transformations. [Coming to Nintendo Switch]

On November 10th, you might give this a try…and not put it down until 2026

The Day Before is an open-world MMO survival from developer, Fntastic. The ambitious online game is set in a deadly, post-pandemic America overrun by flesh-hungry infected and survivors killing each other for food, weapons, and cars. [Coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC]

The release of these four games in particular could shape 2023 to be one of the best years in gaming for a number of reasons. First, they are all from publishers with proven track records of releasing high-quality games. Second, they are all highly anticipated by fans, with many people eagerly awaiting their release. Third, they are all potentially genre-defining games that could set new standards for their respective genres.

Starfield, for example, could be the game that finally makes space exploration a truly immersive and engaging experience. Spider-Man 2 could be the game that once again sets a new standard for the superhero genre, delivering stunning visuals and fluid combat. And Super Mario Wonder could be the game that brings the Mario side-scroller into the modern era, with its innovative updates on a classic formula. The Day Before could start a new trend in the MMO genre and become a juggernaut with its overall theme and heavy focus on plotline.

Of course, it is impossible to say for sure how these games will be received by critics and fans, but there is no doubt that they have the potential to be some of the best games of of the year. With luck, they could help make 2023 one we look back on as a defining year in gaming.
