For many video game fans who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, the 1989 movie The Wizard holds a special place in their hearts – not for being a good film, necessarily, but for being an hour and a half long Nintendo advertisement. More specifically, it’s famous for being the first place that North Americans set their eyes on Super Mario Bros. 3, which had not yet seen its Western release due to a worldwide chip shortage.
The film stars a young Fred Savage (known for his role on The Wonder Years) as Corey and Jenny Lewis (now a successful musician) as Haley. Along with Corey’s younger brother, a gaming prodigy, the trio travels across the country to enter the sibling in a video game competition. During filming, CBS’s Entertainment Tonight stopped by to chat with Savage and check in on the filming. Take a look.
