Nintendo fans rejoice! We just got another taste of the The Super Mario Bros. Movie. in the form of a second trailer. The new preview dropped Tuesday afternoon and gives a much deeper look at the upcoming collaboration between Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo.

First we’ll deal with the elephant in the room: the cast and voice acting is likely the most talked about aspect of the film. Fortunately, this trailer has lot more of it! We get to hear more of Chris Pratt’s interpretation of Mario, which like it or hate it – it’s here. And honestly, it’s fine. We already did an opinion piece when it was first revealed so I won’t waste a lot of time talking about it here. This new clip does feature him saying “Let’s-a-go”, meaning there’s some semblance of the traditional Mario voice, even if it’s just a shred. We also get a sampling of Luigi’s voice as performed by Charlie Day. This personally seemed like a good choice from the moment I found out, and after hearing it I’m even more convinced. His trademark comedic delivery is sure to pair perfectly with the character’s frantic nature. Anya Taylor-Joy’s take on Princess Peach is strong and confident, which may not be what we’re used to, but it seems to fit well with the film’s take on the character. And we also get to hear more Jack Black as Bowser, who just nails the part through and through!

The film’s visual style looks great, and the CGI is top-notch – though that was never really in question, other than minor critiques over character models. We finally get a peek at Donkey Kong, which has been highly anticipated! He looks great, and the trailer’s opening appears to take place in a coliseum filled with Kongs – a large arena in which DK proceeds to beat Mario to a pulp. What does this mean for the plot? Your guess is as good as mine, but it gives the viewer a lot to take in.

It’s clear the filmmakers didn’t forget what made the franchise famous, and that’s iconic the series of games. The clip is filled with clear nods to familiar gameplay elements such as a Fire Flower, Bullet Bill, and a quick shot of Tanooki Mario. One sequence depicts Mario as he attempts to traverse moving platforms and falling Donut Blocks. There’s apparently even a Mario Kart scene, complete with Rainbow Road.

While I don’t know if I’m any more excited after seeing the new trailer than after the first, it definitely helped sustain my intrigue. This is definitely an experience that is long overdue, and other than a few minor critiques, it seems the project is in good hands. We’ll finally get to see the movie in its entirety when it’s released in April, 2023.
