As more and more users manage to get their hands on Sony’s PlayStation 5 console thanks to increased availability, it appears the shortage has come to an end. And while it’s been a frustrating wait for many, this is certainly not the first time a new game console’s demand far outweighs its supply. One of the more memorable examples dates back two console generations with the release of the PlayStation 3.

This news report from 2006 shows a crowd of shoppers waiting outside a Best Buy location in Ontario, each hoping to take home the new console. Players were so eager that many began camping outside days in advance to reserve their spot in line, a practice that we see every new console launch. With the system now approaching seventeen years old (jeez!), it’s fascinating to witness gamers at the height of its hype.

A North Texas native, I was born in '80s and grew up '90s playing a hefty amount of NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES. Some early favorites include Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Road Rash II, and Super Mario World. As the 3D revolution took hold in the late 1990s, my interest in video games waned while my interest in music grew. Then around 2007, I started recollecting some old favorites which led to discovering classics I missed out on. The casual hobby snowballed into a full-blown obsession, and it became my mission to make up for years of lost gaming.
