Let’s rewind, for a moment, all the way back to August of 2013. Retired heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson was hanging out in the green room of Fox Studio in L.A. for a taping of Fox Sports Live. He’s getting ready to play one of the most iconic games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, a game that he happens to have a headlining role in: Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!

Many of us know the title well with its tight responsiveness, pseudo-rhythmic gameplay, and outlandish characters. So it’s surprising to see how foreign the basic controls are to the game’s namesake, a person that in real life, began his professional boxing career with an astonishing 36 win streak. Sadly, his in-game career does not fare as well.

Tyson promptly loses against Glass Joe, the game’s first opponent meant to be an easy victory for the player. That said, he obviously didn’t make it to the notoriously difficult 8-bit version of himself, which serves as the game’s final boss. But despite his quick defeat, the former boxer was certainly having fun, enthusiastically twitching and laughing loudly as Little Mac took an absolute beating on screen. We hope you enjoy Mike Tyson’s first experience with the classic Nintendo game as much as he did.

A North Texas native, I was born in '80s and grew up '90s playing a hefty amount of NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES. Some early favorites include Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Road Rash II, and Super Mario World. As the 3D revolution took hold in the late 1990s, my interest in video games waned while my interest in music grew. Then around 2007, I started recollecting some old favorites which led to discovering classics I missed out on. The casual hobby snowballed into a full-blown obsession, and it became my mission to make up for years of lost gaming.
